How Much Control Do You Think You Have Over Your Fate?
By MICHAEL GONCHAR
We like to think that we have control over our destinies. But what if our fate was determined by our ancestors hundreds of years ago?
How much control do you think you have over your fate?
In “Your Ancestors, Your Fate,” Gregory Clark makes the case that our lineage has more influence on our life’s trajectory than we might think — or be comfortable with:
Inequality of income and wealth has risen in America since the 1970s, yet a large-scale research study recently found that social mobility hadn’t changed much during that time. How can that be?The study, by researchers at Harvard and Berkeley, tells only part of the story. It may be true that mobility hasn’t slowed — but, more to the point, mobility has always been slow. When you look across centuries, and at social status broadly measured — not just income and wealth, but also occupation, education and longevity — social mobility is much slower than many of us believe, or want to believe. This is true in Sweden, a social welfare state; England, where industrial capitalism was born; the United States, one of the most heterogeneous societies in history; and India, a fairly new democracy hobbled by the legacy of caste. Capitalism has not led to pervasive, rapid mobility. Nor have democratization, mass public education, the decline of nepotism, redistributive taxation, the emancipation of women, or even, as in China, socialist revolution. To a striking extent, your overall life chances can be predicted not just from your parents’ status but also from your great-great-great-grandparents’. The recent study suggests that 10 percent of variation in income can be predicted based on your parents’ earnings. In contrast, my colleagues and I estimate that 50 to 60 percent of variation in overall status is determined by your lineage. The fortunes of high-status families inexorably fall, and those of low-status families rise, toward the average — what social scientists call “regression to the mean” — but the process can take 10 to 15 generations (300 to 450 years), much longer than most social scientists have estimated in the past.

— How much control do you think you have over your fate?
— Do you feel your fate is already predetermined by your lineage — your parents and ancestors? Or do you feel you are in the driver’s seat in determining your own success?
— Do you think you will be better or worse off than your parents? In what ways? Why?
— The author makes the argument that “the compulsion to strive, the talent to prosper and the ability to overcome failure are strongly inherited.” Do you think you inherited these qualities? Or do you think you had to develop them on your own?
i think that i have total control over my fate because i get to decide who i want to be and not my an ancestors i decide what i want to be when i grow up i get to choose who i hang out with and what i want to do when it comes to growing up.
ReplyDeletei also feel that i am in the driver seat when i come to determining my fate for the future i know that i am going to what i want to be and my ancestors or parents can't decide what i want to do. i also feel that my fate is not predetermined already because no one decides what i'm going to be when i grow up.
i think that i can be better then my parents because they never went to college and i want to go to college so that i can get a good education for my self so that i can have a good paying job. i think that i'm going to be better than my family because i dont want to make dumb decision that can affect me in the future.

I believe that we all have total control of our own fate. Fate is when you predict the future, and one's actions and behavior determine what will happen next, whether it's good or bad. I feel that our fate is not predetermined by one's lineage, parents or ancestors. Your parents and ancestors may have wanted to do something different that you don't want to, it's your own choice on the life decisions you make in the future.
ReplyDeleteI think I will be better than my parents. My dad wasn't able to go to college and get a career, but my mom did. I know if I make my own right decisions and actually go to college, I can live any career that I want and get to any college that I would want.
I disagree with the quote. No matter where you're parents stand, doesn't mean you can become better or worse. If your parents didn't do so well in their fate, doesn't mean that you're not going to do so well. One can have a good fate even though their parents did not, it all depends on their life decisions. Your parents aren't going to always be there to tell you what or how to live, it's all on yourself in those decisions.

DeleteI think that every person has some power over their fate. Because you can do everything you can possibly do to get a better education and have a better life. But if the people around you or maybe your past family history, it will affect how other people view you and how they will make life for you. I think that if you still work hard and do good, you will have a better chance of having the life that you want and not what other people give you.
ReplyDeleteI think that part of your fate IS predetermined by your family history. But you can always do everything you can if you really want to in order to change your fate. If you have a bad family history you can do something good enough to prove to the people that you are not like your past family members and that you want to do something good in life. And so I think that most of your fate will be determined by your actions and what and how you do things to get what you want.
I also think that I will be better off in life than my parents because up to know I have had a better education and also I can learn from what they have done bad in life to make sure my fate will be better. Plus since I am getting a better education, I have a better chance at getting a better job than they did. Specially since better jobs are paying more and have more benefits since companies ask for more education than they did before. And I think that you develop your own qualities as you grow older and learn from everything you can if you take advantage of what you have and not blow your opportunities off.

I was told that fate means future. If this is what fate mean I believe I have Total control of my fate. I also think that my family control my fate to. I believe this because my family play a big part of who I am and the way I act today, and that can affect my future a lot.
ReplyDeleteYour family controlling your fat can be a good thing or a bad thing. It can be a good thing if your family is good influence. It can be a bad thing if your family is a bad influence. My family have some bad influence and also some good influence. This can be good for my fate because I learn how to survive life.
So i believe that your family control your fate more than you based on their influence. I also believe that some people can totally be way different from their family and do other things that they seen outsider do. But thats not the case for me I wither think my own thoughts than someone else.

I think I have a lot of control over my own fate because mostly my choices determine my fate and only I can control my own choices. Every choice I make determines if I will have a good fate or a bad fate in the future. I feel like my fate is not predetermined by my lineage because my lineage can only partially determine what fate I will have in the future and I control most of it. I believe that I am in the driver’s seat determining my own fate because it is like I am driving to the direction that will lead me to my fate according to my choices. My lineage is in the car and is only determining a little part of where I am going to drive to get my fate.
ReplyDeleteI think I will have a better fate than my parents because I am going to go to college and I am getting a better education than my parents did when they were younger. Some other ways that I will be better off than my parents are, my education, where I live, and my future career. I don’t think that I inherit the qualities to overcome failures. I think that only I can develop my own qualities to overcome fear because everybody has a different way that they think. Some people think that they can’t overcome failure and others say that they can overcome failure.
So I think that only I have control over my fate and I think that only I can develop my own qualities.

Dear reader,
ReplyDeleteI think I have a lot of control over my fate. I believe that everyone has control over their fate because no matter how much someone influence your life if you want to change you can change. I also think I am in control of my life because I choose the path I will take in my future. No one else can decide what I do in the future. That is why I believe that me and everyone else is in control of their fate.
I do not feel my fate is already predetermined by my parents and ancestors because what they did or are doing does not affect me. My mom did not go to college, but that does not affect me. I will finish high school and go to college. I control what happens to me in the future, not any one else. I decided the path I take in the future because it is my choice.
I think that I am better off than my parents. My mom did not go to college. But she pushes me to go there. I have not decided if I am going to college or not. I might go to the marines and my mom and dad support that. They might not have had support.
